"Tim Bates divides his time teaching in Brighton and holidays living in France where he creates stunning architectural, atmospheric ceramic lamps and ‘mini Eden’ planters"

t

Recently my work has taken on a reflection of what has gone before. I have always had an interest in architecture, set design, lighting and spaces. These observations have now culminated in sculptures, lighting pieces and prints. All the new work demonstrates a study of the empty space, giving an air of mystery and potential for creating a story - filling the space. The ceramic work is made in a grogged white body that is unglazed, with the exterior finished in polished graphite grate-blackening. Sometimes the interiors are left white, while others have been painted to add to the atmosphere. The linocut prints are monochromatic, but many have the addition of computer generated and distorted wallpaper, emphasising the perspective of the space but also giving an older character, suggestive of times passed. These become spaces that have been lived in, that suggest a story. Similar, in fact, and inspired by the French deserted houses that can be seen near our home. I also produce functional ceramics and examples can be seen on our gallery/workshop site www.artichautateliers.com

Work is currently on display at Katherine Richards Art Gallery in Hove and Objet Trouvé in Alfriston.
